An excellent song by The Jezabels:
Of Furries and Haters

I originally addressed this in a previous YouTube video. However, I’ve been cleaning out my YouTube account to make way for other projects, and that video was one of many that needed to go. So I decided to make a blog post out of it instead. I’ve rewritten the entire thing so as to make my thoughts and my points more concise while improving other aspects I thought needed to be changed; nothing like an update to keep your information fresh!
I would like to take a moment to address the following question: what is so bad about furries?
I’ve had a lot of people ask me what a furry is, and only a handful of them are real digital natives. Put simply, furry subculture is a fandom of anthropomorphic animal characters with human personality traits and characteristics; a furry is a member of this subculture. Often, there are furry conventions held where members of the fandom dress up as their own furry OCs (original characters) or as their favorite furry character from popular culture. It’s not all that strange when you consider that at anime conventions you have the exact same thing happening: people dress up as their own characters or their favorite anime/manga character.
However, whenever I see anything about furries, it’s normally in a negative light. Typical responses include “yiff in hell, furfag!” and many other related obscenities. So what’s the problem?
If you didn’t know what a furry is, it’s likely you don’t know what “yiff” is, either. Yiff is roleplay sex between two furries or two furry characters. Depictions of yiff are uploaded as illustrations on the internet.
Freaked out yet? You shouldn’t be; not all furries are like this. A lot of people tend to assume that people who like to yiff are into animal porn (which it seems is what pisses a lot of people off), and tend to generalize this model towards the entire furry community. The common analogy: “Imagine your kid is doing an image search on Google for pictures of [insert anthro character here] and suddenly stumbles across a picture of him/her going at it with [insert other anthro character here].” Of course, let’s suppose I did have a kid, and he was searching for images of his favorite cartoon character, and suppose he did stumble upon that sort of thing? The verdict: it’s my own damn fault for not enabling Safe Search! It’s my responsibility as a parent to keep my child from seeing this sort of thing on the internet, and even then he’s going to stumble upon it eventually, because part of growing up is realizing that the world isn’t all peaches and cream.
Many furries feel that those who yiff give the rest of them a bad name given that they are the ones who wind up driving the false preconceptions of the community as a whole. All things considered though, I feel a burning sort of hypocrisy from the self-righteous asshats towards the furry community given that “normal” people are just as guilty for releasing pornographic content on the internet as well. It’s not too weird when you consider how much the pornography industry is prospering. As it is, erotic genres and depictions of sex in art are as old as humanity itself. Why do you think prostitution is referred to as “the oldest profession in the world?” Let’s face it, humans are horny. We are a species primarily driven by our libido. At the end of the day, yiff is just another fetish out of hundreds. Going back to the previous analogy, whether or not you look up a furry character or anything else, you are more than likely going to find something pornographic at some point.
There’s only one reason I think it’s hated so much: it’s just something else for thick shits to tack their problems onto. Look at what happened recently with Japan: 8.9 earthquake followed by a massive tsunami that ravaged the coast and most of the inland which killed roughly 20,000 people. Want to know what the general response to this catastrophe was? If you went on Facebook that day, you would see thousands upon thousands of unsympathetic assholes writing things like, “Japan is getting what they deserve! Payback for Pearl Harbor!” in their statuses. When people write things like this, it makes me wonder how they can live with themselves. How can someone so unhappy be so proud to say stuff like this? It’s reasons like these that I don’t associate with another religion, especially not Islam, Christianity, or Judaism, but that’s a story for another day.
And people say we’re evolving in the opposite direction. I hope for the good of us all that they are wrong…
“Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I’m not sure about the former.” – Albert Einstein
Oh, and remember, “logical fallacy” is naught but a grammatical redundancy.
I have seen Utopia!
